Course Description:
Intended for sustainability-related campus professionals and aspiring students, this course will closely track the advanced carbon neutrality planning process developed by CU in response to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Taught by the Chair of CU’s carbon planning group, students will advance from a complete understanding of carbon inventory techniques to working with a robust model that projects greenhouse gas (GHG) emission trends based on expected changes in campus facilities, energy supplies, and conservation/efficiency practices. The course is taught live on the Boulder campus and features guest speakers from an array of experts in related areas. Approved for all Track A Specializations.
Instructor:
Dave Newport is a veteran environmental and sustainability professional with over 35 years experience in this arena. He is currently the Director of the Environmental Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The Environmental Center operates the nation’s oldest and largest sustainability operations program that partners with campus stakeholders in recycling, zero-waste, alternative transportation, energy outreach and climate action, and a myriad of other sustainability initiatives. Mr. Newport also chairs the campus carbon neutrality working group that is researching and designing pathways for the campus to achieve carbon neutrality as it has pledged under the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).
He is the former Director of the Office of Sustainability at the University of Florida. At UF, Mr. Newport won support for and helped build the sustainability initiative into one of the nation’s leading programs. He designed and implemented UF’s first climate action plan, zero-waste program, and sustainability metrics monitoring program based on global business standards.
Mr. Newport is an officer of the Board of Directors of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, a member of the editorial board of Sustainability magazine, and a CU faculty member that teaches an annual course on Campus Carbon Neutrality Planning. Previously, Mr Newport was the elected Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners in Alachua County, Florida where he led advanced smart growth comprehensive planning and sustainability management efforts. He has also published award-winning environmental publications, taught college level environmental analytical methods, and was an environmental research technician for the pulp and paper industry and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Mr. Newport’s graduate work is in Energy Resource Planning and Policy (MS, University of Maryland, pending) and Bachelors and Associate of Science degrees in management and communications (Syracuse) and environmental science technology (Santa Fe College).
