Sustainability Management

Our newest program area offers students the skills, perspectives, and communication strategies that organizations need to define and reach their sustainability goals while improving the health of their bottom-line. Classes may be taken individually or toward completion of the Sustainability Management Certificate.

Interdisciplinary courses address the confluence of both economic and ecological health, as well as social equity and justice.  Our program philosophy integrates the concerns of people, planet, and profit—the Triple Bottom Line embraced by The United Nations for sustainable development.

Our Students

Our students are interested in sustainability within organizations. Some of our students come to the program on behalf of their current employer, for their own personal professional development, or to gain new skills that they can apply as sustainability consultants. Workers in business, non-profits, local government agencies, educational institutions, hospitals, and other organizations will find the program useful.

Certificate or Individual Courses

Sustainability Management courses can be taken individually or applied to the certificate program. Students earn the Sustainability Management Certificate by completing 100 contact hours: 80 earned via online or face-to-face coursework and 20 earned via the required mentor-led capstone project. An example of a capstone project is a student-developed comprehensive sustainability plan for the student’s organization.

Students may take their courses either face-to-face here at CU-Boulder, or online. Some of our face-to-face courses take advantage of in-person interaction to teach in a hands-on workshop-based environment. Courses immerse students in the latest trends and concepts in sustainability.

Up to 20 hours of coursework from the Sustainable Buildings & Energy Certificate may also be applied to the Sustainability Management Certificate.

Instructors

Sustainability Management courses are taught by sustainability experts from related academic disciplines, as well as proven “green leaders” who have successfully implemented cutting-edge practices in their own lives and organizations.

Inter-Institutional Partnerships

On occasion, we will apply coursework completed at other institutions toward the Sustainability Management Certificate. Currently, the only course approved for cross-credit is the October 29, 2009, “Retool: Business Opportunities in Renewable Electricity” course from the CU-Boulder Deming Center for Entrepreneurship. We will update this list as we add new partnerships.
