Online Composition Hub Offers Students Online Help with Class Assignments

Programs: CE Online Credit

A free service for Continuing Education students, the Online Composition Hub is a tutoring service that uses online tools to help students access experienced, peer tutors who provide guidance and review student work.

Tutors specialize in helping students with traditional papers, but they can assist with web design, video, blogging, Prezi, PowerPoint, and other projects as well. Professional materials, such as resumes, cover letters, applications, and research projects, are also acceptable.

Tutors and students share assignments via Google Docs. Students have the option of communicating with tutors synchronously— both online at the same time and talking via chat, Skype, or Google Hangout— or asynchronously— communicating via messages at separate times.

Geoff Rubinstein, Continuing Education’s director of Online Credit, says the Online Composition Hub adds an important dimension to students’ learning experiences.

“Just as there is no substitute for a great professor, there is no substitute for peer-to-peer interaction,” Rubinstein said. “The Online Composition Hub expands our efforts to facilitate students learning from each other.”

Yufei Sun, a student in finance and native of China, has worked with Composition Hub tutors to examine writing assignments.

“The Online Composition Hub is a great service,” Sun said. “It was so helpful to get my tutor’s feedback on my work, and it’s so convenient because it’s all online. I really think it’s helping me improve my overall writing skills.”

The Online Composition Hub is not an editing service, but the tutors will address concerns or discuss new strategies for improving assignments. Students can seek help at any stage of the project process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, or polishing.

“Our tutors can help students with any kind of writing, but we can also help with other kinds of assignments that involve lots of creative thinking and design,” said Alaina Feltenberger Beaver, Online Composition Hub coordinator. “We take ‘composition’ to mean work that involves words, visual images, sounds, digital tools, and much more.”
